WhatsApp backups to take a bite of Google Drive storage starting in 2024

Android users should be prepared for WhatsApp changes soon. WhatsApp will soon consume Google Drive storage for backups. The company’s updated terms, announced last month, eliminate long-standing exemptions for WhatsApp data.

No specific date has been set by WhatsApp to implement this feature. Users on the beta version of WhatsApp are already experiencing the change. Once this feature is implemented, backups, including chat history, pictures, and videos, will count toward your Google Drive storage quota, regardless of your free or paid plan.

WhatsApp has confirmed that the change will roll out to all Android users in the first half of 2024. You will receive a notification 30 days in advance, which will display as a banner in the app’s chat backup settings. After 30 days, the backup will be implemented on Google Drive storage. After this, Google Drive storage will be required for backup.

This WhatsApp policy change connects Android users with iPhone users. WhatsApp backups on iPhones always count towards iCloud storage. This serves as a reminder to be mindful of your cloud storage usage. This new feature of WhatsApp will be implemented especially with the reduction in the size of free plans.
